Vaso Michels

Tune in to “The Vaso Michels Show” each weeknight from 5pm to 7pm ET on ESPN Sports Radio 92.7 and AM 1300 as Vaso takes an in-depth look at sports in the Wabash.

A native of Highland, Indiana (Region love, practically from Chicago), Vaso grew up in an athletic family. His father Jim, played college basketball for four years making it to the Junior College National Championship in the late 70s. His mother Maria, was a cheerleader on the 1971 East Chicago Washington Senators State Championship basketball team (arguably the greatest high school hoops team in Indiana history). Vaso's older brother Jimmy also played basketball in high school and earning a scholarship to play collegiately. His sister Georgieann, was a standout high school volleyball and basketball player in high school leading her teams to the semi-state in volleyball and several sectional and regional championships on the hardwood.

After playing varsity football and golf in high school, Vaso headed to Indiana State to study communication and peruse an opportunity to play football at Indiana State. Football never panned out which led to Vaso's true love. Radio.

After two months at Indiana State, Vaso began working at the award winning college radio station WISU 89.7 FM as a women's basketball broadcaster. WISU is known for producing numerous professional radio broadcasters (Ben Wagner, Brent Holl, Brian Jennings and more). After one semester at WISU Vaso was asked by Dave Sabaini (his mentor and friend) the Director of Audio at WISU to assume the duties as Sports Director and he gratefully accepted. During his time at WISU Vaso went on to broadcast ISU football, baseball, softball, and men's and women's basketball as the lead play-by-play broadcaster, while creating “Sports Extra” a sports talk show that aired two times a week on the student station. Sports Extra reached the milestone of airing it's 100th episode in the spring semester of 2011.  That same spring Vaso graduated from Indiana State University with BA in Communication, with a minor in Sport and Recreation Management.

Vaso interned in the summer of 2010 at one of the most prestigious sports talk stations in the country, WSCR 670 The Score in Chicago. At the Score Vaso worked on The Danny Mac Show, hosted by Dan McNeil who also graduated from High High School. Vaso treasured his time at The Score learning the ins and outs of sports radio. Vaso attributes a lot of his on and off air radio talents to those at the score who he learned from including, Dan McNeil, Dave Miska, Nick Shepkowski, Matt Spiegel, Jay Zawaski.

In the summer of 2011 Vaso accepted a job at ESPN Sports Radio 92.7/AM1300 to fill the 5-7 time slot, bringing him back to the Wabash Valley airwaves. With his knowledge of ISU athletics, Vaso wanted to keep his show based on ISU sports while covering local and national stories. He is excited about the opportunity to bring the Wabash Valley a commercial sports talk show like it has never seen.

“I am thrilled with the opportunity to go after my dream of being a sports broadcaster.

I get the chance to go to work every day and talk about sports while working with

some of the best people in the business. It is truly a blessing that I will cherish”

Vaso is also the lead play-by-play voice for high school sports on ESPN Sports Radio while continuing his duties as the color analyst for Indiana State Women's Basketball on the radio. Also, Vaso occasionally provides color analysis for Missouri Valley Live.

Vaso Michels resides in Terre Haute, and enjoys golfing when he gets the chance, watching TV, washing his car, working out and attending sporting events across the county.
